My husband bought me some beautiful roses for Valentine’s Day from him and my son. They’ve been displayed in a vase on my sideboard in all their glory, but I noticed yesterday that the roses were starting to look a little wilted.
With all the love that these roses represented, I didn’t want to simply let them die and throw them away. I do believe that objects can carry our intentions and energy (flowers are alive after all!), and when this gift was given from a place of love and connection, I didn’t want that to be transferred to the bin.
So I knew I had to find another way for these flowers to be recycled & reused. As someone who cares about our planet and try’s not to be wasteful, I loved the idea of these roses becoming zero waste and not one of those valentines gifts that would end up in a landfill somewhere.
After doing some research, I was overwhelmed with choices! I decided I was going to try a little bit of everything so I could release my creativity.
Some of the ideas I tried were:
*Pot Pourri
*Rose Tea
*Rose Perfume (surprisingly easy!)
*Added into a bath salt soak
*Used the leftovers for my Toddler to use as a transferring activity!
In order to do any of these ideas though, you do need to dry your flower petals first! I thought I’d give you the recipe to my favourite craft which was the pot pourri:
Start by pulling off the rose heads and separating all of the petals, making sure to remove any dead petals. (This was actually really therapeutic and a lovely mindfulness activity to do!)
Next we need to dry the petals. You can do this by popping them in the oven for 20 mins at 200F or 80C. But I chose the let them air dry to preserve more of their scent. You should spread the petals onto a drying rack or any kind of sheet with holes in for ventilation. I actually use our pizza tray if I’m drying flowers or herbs as it actually does a great job! Then you have to wait until they are all dry, I regularly move the petals around so they don’t keep any moisture.
Once dry, mix the petals with any extra scents you enjoy. I chose cinnamon and some dried oranges.
Then it’s ready! You can leave it in a pretty bowl so your room smells lovely or you can pop it into little canvas bags and use them to freshen up your clothes draws!
This pot pourri was so fun to make and was a really lovely way to reuse these roses, allowing that love and energy to transfer to my clothing! Now every time I open my clothes draw I smile as they smell so divine and it reminds me of my husbands and sons love.
Let me know in the comments if you tried this craft or if you have any other ideas for how to recycle dying flowers!
